Navigating Complexity: Planning Across Generations
Join the inaugural cohort of the Navigating Complexity: Planning Across Generations Masterclass on February 19-20, 2025 at the Sheraton Flowood Refuge Hotel and Conference Center. Participants will engage in collaborative group work, analyzing an actual family business case study through a series of Thinking and Doing exercises.
Participants of the Navigating Complexity Masterclass will receive unique insights and hands-on experience from industry experts regarding the effective transition of family businesses to the next generation. Over the two-day period, leaders of family businesses will explore human resources strategies, develop skills to effectively manage internal and external conflicts, and engage in challenging conversations, among other topics.
This Masterclass also supports experienced family business proprietors and next generation family business leaders in applying key concepts from Northwestern professor Dr. Justin Craig’s book, Continuity Model Generation: Integrating Wealth, Strategy, Talent, and Governance Plans.
Masterclass Schedule
Wednesday, February 19th
10:30 AM Check-in
Participants will receive all instructional materials needed during the two-day Masterclass.
11:00 AM Session One led by Justin Craig, Ph.D.
Dr. Craig will cover the application of "The 4 Ls Framework - From Learning to Letting Go" and "The Big Tent Approach" to our family business.
12:30 PM Lunch

1:30 PM Session Two: Case A led by Clay Dibrell, Ph.D.
Dr. Dibrell will discuss Case study A before participants are put into "Thinking and Doing" groups.

3:30 PM Session Three led by Tyge Payne, Ph.D.
Dr. Payne will be covering the Strategic Planning Principles.
5:00 PM Dinner Reception
Includes an open bar and hors d'oeuvres
Thursday, February 20th
8:00 AM Breakfast Discussions Among Groups
8:45 AM Session Four: Case B led by Walter Davis, Ph.D.
Participants will discuss Case B which covers "Understanding Development, Motivation and Retention of Talented Managers." Dr. Davis will discuss "Preparing Employees for Change."
10:00 PM Coffee Break
Includes soft drinks and water
10:30 PM Closing Session led by Clay Dibrell and Justin Craig
Dr. Dibrell and Dr. Craig will wrap up and provide a call-to-action for participants to apply key principles covered to their own families/family businesses.
